Health Informatics is the way information is applied and managed within the healthcare field. Technology is utilized in order to improve the healthcare field and these improvements are done in various ways. The constant evolution of technology allows healthcare providers and others that work in healthcare to do their jobs easier and in a better way. It also allows for patients to access their health records in an easier and more efficient way, while also keeping their information secure. Some of the ways Health Informatics is beneficial to the world of Women's Health are; utilizing Electronic Health Records (EHR) to track and manage their care, allows patients to be more involved with their own care, public health monitoring, as well as improving access to care.
EHRs allow a patient and those on their care team to easily access the information related to any of their conditions, diagnoses, and other issues. This also will prevent miscommunication and decrease mistakes between providers and/or the patient compared to handwritten information; such as a prescription. Patients are able to be more involved with their own care because they have easier access to their own personal medical information and even easier communication to their providers. The various online systems that a patient and providers use can allow for a patient to contact their provider electronically, book their appointments, and other tools. It is important with just about anything in the medical field to be monitored at a public health level to better educate patients and providers about different rates of diseases or conditions, such as breast cancer, maternal mortality rates, and more. Access to care is improved through Health Informatics as patients can receive care through telemedicine appointments. This provides access to care to those that may live in rural areas or areas that may be underserved.
